Amos
Author: Amos
Date of Writing: 8th century BC
Type of Book: Prophetic
Theme: God's judgment of sin
Amos was a man from Judah who was called to prophesy in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Uzziah. He was a rancher and farmer by trade and was called to prophesy for a very short period of time, perhaps only a few days. He wasn't a polished professional, trained and prepared for a lengthy ministry. He was just a simple farm boy who told the people what God wanted them to hear. He was met with a lot of opposition, but he delivered God's message and went back home.
God called Amos to expose the rampant injustice in the northern kingdom. Amos let the people know that God would defend the poor and the disadvantaged, and that those who exploited the weaknesses of others would be punished. This was not a popular message. But God who is just, sees injustice and oppression, and He will respond to it and defend the downtrodden. Destruction will come if there isn't repentance.
Despite the dire warnings of coming judgment, the final chapter also gives the promise of ultimate restoration. God's warnings of judgment always include the opportunity for repentance, and the bright future that ultimately awaits God's people.
