2 Peter

Author: Peter
Type of Book: General Epistle
Date of Writing: AD 67
Theme: Sanctification through God's Word

The apostle Peter wrote this book, probably from Rome, shortly before his death in AD 67. While the first epistle of Peter was addressed to the Jewish Christians spread throughout Asia Minor, this second epistle was written to Christians everywhere. Peter sensed that his death was rapidly approaching, and this letter was written to remind the believers of the things that were ultimately important. In this respect, it is similar to the second epistle of Timothy, which was Paul's final letter.

In 1 Peter, he emphasized suffering and the hope of heaven. In this letter, Peter addressed the apostasy and heresy that was growing in the church and that would increase in the future. The defense against this false teaching was to adhere strongly to the inspired Word of God. He referred often to knowledge and learning. His emphasis on God's Word bears a striking similarity to Paul's emphasis in his last letter, 2 Timothy. Both men, in their final letters, drove home the point that studying and teaching the Word of God is the only way to grow into who God wants us to be.

Sanctification is always through the Word. With all the clever false teachings out there, the answer isn't to become an expert in the false teachings. The answer is to know the truth and compare every teaching to that revealed truth.

Peter also reminded his readers that the Lord could return any time. God isn't slack concerning His promises, but is patient toward us (2 Peter 3:9). And since this world will all burn one day, this knowledge should cause us to live with eternity in view (2 Peter 3:11-12).

The epistle is summarized in the final two verses, which say, "You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen" (2 Peter 3:17-18).
