Hosea 1-5, Psalm 122
Any of us who are parents have felt the tremendous hurt when our children turn their backs on us, treat us with disrespect and go their own way. Yet, how easy it is to do the same thing to our Heavenly Father and somehow believe it wouldn’t or shouldn’t bother Him. As the story of Hosea unfolds your heart breaks as his wife not only turns to harlotry but Hosea has to go and buy her back publicly. As we read this it illustrates just how much we take God for granted. The example was as true for Israel as it is for us now. In Hosea 5:3, it says”…And Israel is not hidden from Me…”. In Hebrews 4:13, the author writes, “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” So, nothing escapes God’s notice, but the difference is that where our love has limits and is conditional, His love is perfect and unconditional. God’s ways are so much higher than our ways. In Matthew 7:11, Jesus says, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” And if we ever feel we have blown it to the point that God couldn’t possibly forgive us, remember Paul’s words in Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
One of the problems then, as now, is many are ignorant to the truths of God. In Hosea 4:1, it says, “…There is no truth or mercy Or knowledge of God in the land.” In 4:6, it says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…”. Our society is the most biblically illiterate generation in a long time. Ignorance is never an excuse for God. Many claim they have no time to study and abide in His Word. But these same people can quote a multitude of sport’s statistics, update you on the latest movies or TV shows, update you on every nuance of their children and grandchildren, update you on the latest political situation, etc. These are our idols, not Baal, that keep our eyes off God. Unfortunately, even the increase in churches that have moved away from God’s Word in order to be more “relevant” have kept people in the dark. The purpose of The One Year Bible Challenge is to help people fall back in love or fall in love for the first time with God’s Word.
Lastly, notice the prophecy which has been fulfilled in Hosea 2:16, “And it shall be, in that day,” says the Lord, “That you will call Me ‘My Husband’, And no longer call Me ‘My Master’,” by us, “the Bride of Christ”. Hosea 2:19-20, details this further, as we read, “I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me In righteousness and justice, In loving kindness and mercy; I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, And you shall know the Lord”. What they were looking forward to in expectation, we, the Bride of Christ, have seen occur as we have accepted and received the Holy Spirit.
