Joshua 13-21, Psalm 68
Chuck Smith said, “There are still strongholds that the enemy has in my flesh and plans that God has yet to fulfill. And as long as God gives me breath, I intend to move forward in the Lord, looking forward to what God will do in and through my life. God’s retirement program is in heaven, not here on earth. Don’t quit because you are older. You are never too old to advance spiritually. It isn’t time to hang it up until the Lord takes you home”. Pastor Chuck faithfully lived out these words right until the Lord took him home.
We haven’t heard much about Caleb since earlier in the desert wanderings. He was faithful then. Now 45 years later, at the age of 85, he is not looking for an easy ending to his life. Stepping out in faith, he wants to take on the giants, trusting fully in God. Look at the faith and the total commitment behind his words in Joshua 14:10-12, “And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.” What a contrast to Joshua’s comments to the rest of the children of Israel in Joshua 18:3, “How long will you neglect to go and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers has given you?”
In the Spirit filled life which we possess, we have to make a choice. Are we comfortable with being saved and allowing ourselves to coast, ignoring the movement of the Holy Spirit? Or are we stepping out each day seeking what we can do to glorify God? God never wanted us to just exist. He desires us to enjoy the abundant life in the Spirit. In John 10:10, Jesus said, “.. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” So, step out each day in the confidence of the Holy Spirit. The only thing that holds Him back is ourselves.Paul said in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
