Judges 19-21, Psalm 76
Judges 21:25, the final verse in this book, pretty much sums up the theme of those times, “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes”. I have heard many reading this book express surprise over the brutality and the level of depravity in it’s pages. A few people have asked is it really necessary to read how Israel keeps sinking lower and lower, and asked how does that apply to us now? Unfortunately, unless we are completely unaware and oblivious to our surroundings, the nation and the world that we currently live in would fit well into these pages of history.
We live at a juncture in history where moral absolutes are repugnant to the majority. The code to live by now seems to be moral relativism, where everyone does what is right in their own eyes and our godless society sets the new norms. So, as we shake our heads in disbelief at what we just finished reading, let’s take an honest look at our current situation.
The greatness of America was due to the prominent place that was given to God, His Word, and His principles in the founding of our nation. We, as a nation have abandoned these roots. So we don’t sacrifice our children to the god, Molech; instead we sacrifice our children in the name of abortion to the god of self, wrong timing, sexual freedom. We don’t often hear of a concubine being cut up and mailed; but we do hear of the selling of baby parts by an institution that is supported and funded by our own government. We read of the openness of the homosexuality among the people of Gibeah, yet we have gone even further, we now applaud homosexuals, bisexuals, transgenders and many churches who claim to represent God embrace it. Sexual promiscuity is now the norm, with the overwhelming majority of couples living together before marriage( if you question this they completely believe their way is superior). We have and support every form of sexual depravity including pornography, prostitution, even the sex slave trade (the hotels surrounding the location of the super bowl every year are filled with victims of this). We have read page upon page of brutality in the Scriptures, yet more Christians have been killed for their faith worldwide in this last century than all of the previous centuries combined. Lastly, whatever side of the political aisle that you are on, (even if certain individuals seem to support some of the views shared by the Christian community), these politicians and leaders spew out their opinions with no thought of God. Have you ever seen any individual on any news channel respect or back down from their opponent when debating. The answer is, no. If our politicians and leaders would come before God, we would see much more humility, instead they hold onto their opinions as though they are god-like.
The answer is to open our eyes and realize the level of our nation’s depravity. When the Israelites realized this they would repent and desperately call on the name of God. Are we willing to call out? Are we willing to answer that call? (Isaiah 6:8, “…Here am I! Send me.”). God gave the formula to Solomon if we truly desire healing for our nation in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” The answer was then for Israel and is now for the United States, revival. With it we can do great things, without it, it is only a matter of time before another empire implodes because of the weight of their sin.
