Ezekiel 9-12, Psalm 33
Last year, my wife and I were involved in a fairly serious car accident. By the grace of God no one was seriously hurt. We have driven over a million miles in our lifetime but this was our first accident involving another vehicle. We drive our whole lives knowing the possibility of getting into one, we have many near misses, but we never really imagine it. One second before impact I realized that it was definitely about to happen and was now beyond anything we could do to prevent it.
Through His prophets, through His Son, through His Word we have a God who continually warns a people who choose to disregard His warnings. But, in His time they always come true, and we can be 100% sure that everything that He says will happen in the future, will occur, in His time. But the world then and now continue on like nothing will ever change. How many times did He warn His people that they were going to be taken over, destroyed and taken into captivity by Babylon, but they blindly refused to listen. He says in Ezekiel 12:25, "For I am the Lord. I speak, and the word which I speak will come to pass; it will no more be postponed; for in your days, O rebellious house, I will say the word and perform it," says the Lord God." These events were completely fulfilled 5 years after this prophecy was told.
God continually warned His people that He would not allow Himself to be worshiped alongside or in addition to other false gods. We get a vivid picture of this warning coming true as the glory of God departed from the temple. We see in Ez 10:4, that "...the glory of the Lord went up from the cherub, and paused over the threshold of the temple..." We read further in 10:18-19 that "Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim....and they stood at the door of the east gate of the Lord's house, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them." We read in Ez 11:23, "And the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city and stood on the mountain, which is on the east side of the city." Though some of the remnant did return and the second temple was rebuilt after their captivity, with the exception of when Jesus Himself entered that structure, the glory of God was not in that temple. This mountain referred to in Ez.11:23 is the Mount of Olives. Not by coincidence, we read in Acts 1:9-12, that this mountain is the exact location where Jesus ascended. We also read in Zechariah 14:4 that this mountain will be the exact location where Jesus will come back at His second coming.
As current events continue to culminate, we who are in His Word realize that all that has been foretold concerning end time prophecy is occurring, though we don't know the exact time or hour. As in the times of Ezekiel the world now chooses to disregard the warnings. We read in 2 Peter 3:3-4, "...knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." Like my accident above, His prophecies will be fulfilled. May we tirelessly sound the alarm to a world who seems to be deaf to the things of God, realizing that some may reluctantly hear and come to Christ before it is too late.
